Pro Bono Work.

Free design and development for small organizations on this coast, given away when there is room to give it away.

Why This Exists

A new brand or a working website can change what a small organization is actually able to do. More volunteers sign up because the form finally works on a phone. A grant application gets taken seriously because the site behind it looks like the work does. People find you at all.

Those are the projects I most like being part of, and they are often the ones that cannot be paid for. So when there is room in the schedule, I give one away.

How It Works

It works like a small grant. Applications are open all the time, they get read as they come in, and projects are taken on as time allows. Some months there is room for one, some months there is not.

What gets given away is a real piece of work with a beginning and an end: a small site built, a broken one repaired, an accessibility pass done properly, a newsletter set up so somebody who is not technical can send it. Something I can finish and hand over, so it is yours when it is done.

If what you need turns out to be bigger than one project, apply anyway and say so. I will tell you what the real path looks like, including the parts that have nothing to do with hiring me.

What Helps

None of this is required. If the need is real, apply anyway.

  • Naming the specific thing that is not working, so I can tell what it would take
  • People you serve who are here on this coast, so I can come and meet you
  • Somebody who can spare an hour or two along the way to answer questions only you can answer
  • A sense of what is going wrong, even if you are not sure what the fix is

I would much rather hear from you than have you decide in advance that the answer is no. You will get an answer either way, and you are always welcome to apply again later.

Apply

Tell me about your organization and what would help most. A few sentences per box is plenty, and there are no wrong answers in here.

So I can write back. Nothing else ever goes to it.

A link to whatever you have now tells me more than a description of it.

Who you serve, and roughly how many people that is.

If you are not sure what the fix is, describe what is going wrong instead. That is often more useful.

A grant deadline, a season, an event, a compliance date. If nothing is, that is a fine answer.

What happens to this is on the privacy page.

If You Do This Work Too

If you design, build, write, or take photographs for a living anywhere near here, you could run something like this as well. It takes one project and one yes, and no page like this one behind it. The organizations that could use the help are not hard to find once you start asking.

If you would rather not do it on your own, get in touch. Some of these projects are better with two people on them, and I would gladly split one with a photographer, an illustrator, a writer, or another developer. The same goes if you already give work away and want somewhere to send the parts you do not cover.
